EU Energy Energy policy for a competitive Europe
Europe's citizens and companies need a secure supply of energy at affordable prices in order maintaining our standards of living. At the same time, the negative effects of energy use, particularly fossil fuels, on the environment must be reduced. That is why EU policy focuses on creating a competitive internal energy market offering quality service at low prices, on developing renewable energy sources, on reducing dependence on imported fuels, and on doing more with a lower consumption of energy.

EU anual benchmarking reports per country Annual benchmarking reports on the opening of the electricity and gas markets since 2000 monitors how EU legislation is implemented and its practical results in individual EU countries. Input for the reports comes from the European Regulators Group (ERGEG) and the Commission's own investigations.

EU Energy Forecast documents per country According to their forecast documents, ten Member States expect to exceed their national targets for renewable energy, and five expect to need to use the Directive's cooperation mechanisms and reach their target by developing some renewable energy in another Member State or a third country. Whilst Member States expect to use the cooperation mechanisms for only a small amount of energy (around 2-3 mtoe), the forecast total production of renewable energy would actually exceed the 20% target and reach 20.3%. A summary is included here.

Ιστοσελίδες της ΕΕ για τις Ανανεώσιμες Πηγές Ενέργειας Renewable sources of energy – wind power, solar power (thermal, photovoltaic and concentrated), hydro-electric power, tidal power, geothermal energy and biomass – are essential alternatives to fossil fuels. Their use reduces our greenhouse gas emissions, diversifies our energy supply and reduces our dependence on unreliable and volatile fossil fuel markets (in particular oil and gas). The growth of renewable energy sources also stimulates employment in Europe, the creation of new technologies and improves our trade balance.
